There’s a new fascist trend in America. It’s called the “UnFair Campaign” that attacks a thing called white privilege. If you’re white, there are certain privileges that come with it and as a result being white is unfair to people who aren’t white.
I assume there’s China privilege in China and Japanese privilege in Japan. And most likely among Hispanic people, there’s a bit of Hispanic privilege.
When the Chinese and Irish immigrated to America, they weren’t treated well. Help wanted signs often included, “Irish Need Not Apply.” It was so bad that a prominent Irish family got one of its own elected to the presidency of the United States and created a political dynasty. Math test scores among the Chinese are some of the highest in the nation.
When my grandparents were in Italy, they were linked into Italian privilege because they were Italian. When they immigrated to America, that privilege went away. They were Wops and Dagos.
My mother overhead one of our neighbors tell her daughter not to date “that Dago” she was seeing. My grandparents barely spoke English. They were very poor. It didn’t stop their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren from becoming successful. Of course, we were white.
My father served in the military and got his leg blown off in the Korean War. Did he complain about “two-legged privilege”? No. He did the best he could with what he had.
Equality is a myth. Some people are prettier than others. Some are stronger and taller. We all have different types and degrees of talent.
Out of thousands of college football players, only around 250 get drafted each year and a percentage of them don’t make it in the pros. The same is true in baseball and basketball. By the way, the majority of basketball players are black and very tall. Are these traits a “privilege”?
There are tens of thousands of musicians in the world, but only a few of them make millions of dollars. Most of them are white. Jimi Hendrix was an exception in the hard-rock world. He could have made millions but he choked on his own vomit and died of asphyxia after overdosing on barbiturates. He was 27 years old. Did “white privilege” do this to him?
Limitations and hard knocks are often an incentive to great things. There have been lots of people who have been born with all types of privileges and squandered them. Then there are people who had nothing and made great strides toward success — white and black.
Character counts more than what’s in your bank account or the color of your skin. Do some people see skin color and ethnic origin before they see anything else? Certainly. Do they judge negatively because of them? Many people do. But that didn’t stop Bill Cosby or Oprah Winfrey and many other successful black people. Oprah’s worth nearly $3 billion. In fact, she’s the richest African-American person in the world.
Do some people dislike her because she’s black? Yes. What other people thought of her didn’t stop her from becoming successful.
The UnFair Campaign is only going to cause resentment and more unfairness.
Do I know what it’s like to be black? I do not. Is attacking white privilege going to change that? No. Is there a better way to get whites to understand what it means to be black? Yes.
There are millions of white people who are sorry examples of wasted talent. Their “whiteness” didn’t help them one bit. Is it harder for blacks? Yes. Will attacking “white privilege” make it better? No better than naming a street after Martin Luther King Jr. will change the economic outlook of the neighborhood.
“Kwasi Enin, a 17-year-old from Shirley, New York, is the son of immigrants from Ghana. He ranks 11 out of a class of 647, scored 2250 out of 2400 on his SAT college admissions test, took 11 Advanced Placement classes in high school, sings in the a cappella group, is an accomplished violist and athlete. He also makes time to volunteer at a local hospital.”
Kwasi Enin is black. “He gained admission to all eight Ivy League universities — Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Harvard, Brown, Penn, and Yale.”
There are all-black schools where the students do exceptionally well because they are not permitted to make excuses. Liberals have made it easy for blacks to fail because of their constant claims that “white privilege” and racism are the reason for their condition.
Life is not fair. We’re not equal. Passing more laws forcing equality will only make inequality worse.
So don’t ask me to apologize for being born better than some people and worse than other people. If you want me to understand what it’s like to be black, attacking me for being white isn’t the way to do it.
